If you’ve looked into sleep supplements, you know the options usually involve some combination of the following: melatonin, magnesium, GABA, and herbal blends. With so much information out there, many turn to trusted experts like Dr. Andrew Huberman for clear, science-based recommendations. Specifically, his sleep stack & toolkit has garnered millions of listens & views on YouTube, podcast streaming platforms, and his newsletter.

Notably, melatonin is absent from his sleep stack, similar to Thirdzy’s  melatonin free sleep aid

So how do they compare side by side?

Who Is Dr. Andrew Huberman?

Dr. Andrew Huberman is a tenured professor in the Department of Neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He’s gained widespread recognition for his research on brain development, brain plasticity, and neural regeneration and repair. He’s also become a respected authority in the sleep health space.

His podcast & newsletter, Huberman Lab, is now one of the most popular health podcasts globally, where he breaks down complex science into practical advice. His evidence-based approach has made him a trusted voice in health and sleep optimization.

Dr. Huberman Sleep Stack: Quick Hits

Sleep was one of the first topics Huberman covered in his podcast, where he explored light exposure, melatonin, dreaming, and supplementation in depth. He went deep into the physiology of sleep, light exposure, melatonin, dreaming, jet lag, sleep hygiene, and types of popular sleep supplements. And he gave detailed recommendations for supplementation, which he and others often refer to as a “sleep stack.”

What a Sleep Stack is and Why It Matters

The term sleep stack usually refers to a combination of supplements a person takes to maintain or improve their sleep. This might include supplements or superfood herbs designed to help them fall asleep, stay asleep, or enhance the quality of their sleep.

Thirdzy vs. Huberman’s Sleep Stack: Ingredient Comparison

Here, we’ll provide a full breakdown of Huberman’s recommendations and show you how the formula for Thirdzy’s Rest & Recover Collagen stacks up by comparison.

  • Magnesium: Huberman — 200 mg bisglycinate; Thirdzy — 250 mg bisglycinate

  • L-Theanine: Huberman — 100–400 mg; Thirdzy — 200 mg

  • Glycine: Huberman — 2 g; Thirdzy — ~3 g from collagen

  • GABA: Huberman — 100 mg; Thirdzy — 300 mg

  • Apigenin: Huberman — 50 mg (with cautions); Thirdzy — intentionally left out

The cliff notes for each ingredient:

  • Magnesium threonate and magnesium bisglycinate are the best forms of magnesium for promoting sleep and relaxation because they can easily cross the brain-blood barrier.

  • L-Theanine promotes calming and anti-anxiety effects, but Huberman advises against consumption if you have night terrors or sleepwalk regularly.

  • Glycine has been shown to improve multiple markers of sleep quality, and is used by both Huberman & Thirdzy. **Collagen is ⅓ glycine, so Thirdzy’s 10g of collagen provides ~3 g of glycine. Taking glycine in this form is a more “food-based” approach to getting glycine compared to pure glycine supplementation. Collagen also supports joint health, reduces inflammation, and aids muscle recovery, on top of the sleep benefits. This makes it a recovery favorite for CrossFit athletes and other athletes.

  • GABA helps calm the body and potentially improves sleep quality, Thirdzy uses 300mg, slightly higher than the 100mg in Huberman’s sleep stack.

  • Apigenin, a chamomile extract, has been shown to suppress estrogen, which is why Thirdzy excludes it.

Thirdzy’s Rest & Recover Collagen closely mirrors Dr. Huberman’s recommended sleep stack, but with one key difference: it combines all the ingredients into a single, convenient formula. That makes it simple to use nightly while supporting both sleep quality and recovery, without the cost and inconvenience of multiple, separate supplements.

Why Thirdzy Doesn’t Use Melatonin

While melatonin is a common sleep aid, research suggests long-term use may disrupt hormone balance and metabolism. Thirdzy was formulated to deliver the benefits of deeper sleep and recovery without those potential drawbacks, making it a safer option for nightly use.

Sleep tight,
