WHY NO MELATONIN?
Melatonin is a hormone that helps with sleep timing. It is found in MANY supplements that are positioned to help with sleep and has research to support its effects for helping with sleep timing issues.
Many people have tried melatonin, but either do not want to use it regularly or did not like the effects of using it.
Before we created PM Recovery Collagen, we were having trouble finding a natural supplement that was melatonin free. Melatonin is not a hormone that we think is worth using nightly. And we didn’t just want help falling asleep, we wanted a combination of ingredients that would help support relaxation, great sleep quality throughout the night, and improve recovery from physical and mental stress.

There is a role for melatonin use in short term sleep timing and rhythm challenges, for example to address jet lag.
Even in those cases though, most people are probably taking way too much. 1 -1.5g is a reasonable amount – but most people take really big doses in the 5-10mg range. It also seems to be the case that people using melatonin need to increase their dosing over time to feel the same effects, and this likely causes their body to produce less of its own.
For premenopausal and healthy people, the concern is that melatonin can have impacts on sex hormones and metabolic hormones. There is some research to suggest that there are suppressive effects on these systems. Consider that seasonally we have higher circulating melatonin in the winter when we are metabolically slower and many species that don’t mate in the winter have their sex hormones suppressed by very high circulating melatonin levels.
Basically – the long term positive effects of taking melatonin for sleep are virtually zero and the potential unwanted effects on other hormones outweigh the sleep benefits in healthy populations.

HOW DOES IT WORK WITHOUT MELATONIN?
For a supplement to help with sleep it needs to help either:
Counteract over stimulation and help you to winddown OR support your brain chemistry and hormones for strong sleep spindles and deep and REM sleep brain waves.

It does not contain melatonin, so it does not replace your own production of sleep hormones.

I HAVE MENOPAUSE AND IT IS RUINING MY SLEEP, WILL THIS HELP?
Maybe. We know that is not the answer you want! But we aren’t here to make false promises. Everybody is different and there are many things that can be causing your sleep challenges during menopause. Hormones have a massive effect on all of our body’s processes, including sleep. To make things more complicated, all of your hormones play together and have effects on your other brain chemicals. So when one thing changes, it will affect everything else.
Some menopausal and perimenopausal women have used our product and found it very helpful - but since every person is unique, you will need to experiment and see what works best for you.
CAN I USE PM RECOVERY COLLAGEN WHILE PREGNANT?
Unfortunately there aren't enough studies done with our ingredients during pregnancy for us to say that it's a safe option.

WILL PM RECOVERY COLLAGEN BREAK MY FAST?
It depends on how much of a purest you are around fasting. Some people will say that anything other than water isn't fasting.
However, if you're fasting because you're trying to get the metabolic benefits of not having fluctuations in your blood sugar and insulin levels, then 1 scoop of Thirdzy is going to have very little impact on your fast. There is no sugar and only 9g of protein (in the 10g of collagen) - which is not enough to push your body out of a metabolically fasting state.
CAN I TAKE MY PM RECOVERY COLLAGEN IF I HAVE BEEN DRINKING ALCOHOL?
We do not recommend using PM Recovery Collagen while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
While having a drink with dinner and then taking your Thirdzy is very unlikely to be a problem. Your liver processes both natural supplements and alcohol (as well as other over the counter and pharmaceutical substances). Having any combination of substances in your blood will slow down their metabolism, increasing the time that they are in your body.
Alcohol also exerts significant negative effects on your sleep quality – particularly REM sleep – that will counter the positive benefits of PM Recovery Collagen.
WHY DOES IT RECOMMEND CONSULTING A HEALTH CARE PROVIDER FOR USE BEYOND 4 WEEKS ON THE CANADIAN PACKAGING?
The 'consult a health care provider for use beyond 4 weeks' statement is something that Health Canada requires. Nearly all supplements - even mutivitamins and minerals, in Canada have some form of 'consult a health practitioner for use beyond x timeframe.'
There is not a specific reason for the 4 week timeline - none of the ingredients show negative effects after use of longer durations. In fact, many of the studies on the ingredients use intervention timelines of 12 weeks.
